National Society of High School Scholars

Monthly Update for December 2002

Claes Nobel attends Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo

Mr. Nobel traveled to Oslo, Norway, to attend the Nobel Peace Prize presentation recognizing President Jimmy Carter.  Following the ceremony on Wednesday, December 12, Mr. Nobel, his wife Margaretha and daughter Nina were invited to a private lunch with Jimmy Carter and Rosalyn Carter hosted by the U.S. Ambassador to Norway. Mr. Nobel took time out of his schedule in Oslo to personally call and congratulate two of our new scholarship winners. A full list of scholarship winners will be in the January update. Mr. Nobel will write about his trip and meeting with Jimmy Carter in the next update as well.

Exciting Summer Opportunities

We are exploring a few ideas for the summer and want your feedback. Our goal is to help connect members with programs that will be educational, international, FUN, and culturally enriching. We are open to your suggestions as well. Please take the survey below to give us your opinion. We are looking at the following options:

1. Educational and cultural trip to Sweden to learn about the history and events surrounding the Nobel Prizes.

2. Educational and cultural trip to Sydney, Australia, in partnership with a major university.

3. Partnering with Projects Abroad to allow members to spend up to two months in countries like China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Russia, and Sri Lanka. Students can provide assistance in hospitals, schools, orphanages, media, and local businesses through a host family and pre-university program.  Take Survey Now

Chance to win a free trip to the UK

The British Council USA is offering a free trip to the UK as a first place prize in a competition for students age 16-30 years old. The contest is to best describe in words or picture what "British" is to you. Looks like fun! You can find the info by clicking here

Visits With School Counselors

NSHSS staff members are visiting high school counselors and principals across the country to personally introduce our programs. We are always open to feedback from professional educators and students to make sure that we offer the benefits that you want and need.

Most recently, on November 26, staff member Michele Woodward visited guidance counselors in two South Carolina High Schools--Ridge View High School in Columbia and Irmo High School in the Irmo area to talk about our mission, vision, and goals. Let us know if there is a counselor or principal at your school who would like to visit with a staff member info@nshss.org.
