Congratulations Graduates

I want to personally congratulate all of our members who will soon be graduating from high school.  My very best wishes are extended to you and your families as you achieve this academic goal.  I want to encourage you to continue to strive for excellence as you prepare to enter college.  Learn about yourself and be open to new ideas and challenges.  As you expand your horizons, you should establish new benchmarks to monitor your achievements.  You are the hope of our planet, and I am confident that you will continue in your personal and academic success.

Best Wishes,

National Scholarship Month Kickoff

Claes Nobel was selected to speak at the kick-off ceremonies of National Scholarship Month in Washington DC. The event, held at The National Press Club, was hosted by The National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA). NSHSS is a member of the NSPA whose purpose is to manage scholarship funds and provide resources for groups that provide scholarships. A highlight of the event was a luncheon sponsored by Scholarship America, featuring Miss America Erika Harold as speaker. The event was simulcast on C-Span and National Public Radio.

Member Event at the Press Club in Washington D.C.

A member reception was held at The National Press Club on May 2, where Mr. Nobel presented an award to Carolyn Amole, senior at West Potomac High School, Alexandria, Virginia.  Carolyn is a recipient of a National Scholar Award and will attend Harvard in the fall.  Other invited guests spoke to our members about scholarship resources and opportunities, including Jean Danielson of FastWeb and Emily Riedel of The Presidential Classroom.

This was a wonderful opportunity to meet and get to know members, and we are planning other events in the upcoming months in various parts of the country, so please keep posted.

Maeling Tapp, of Takoma Academy in Takoma Park, Maryland, said of the Washington, DC event:

"Attending the NSHSS member reception really made me feel proud to be a member of such a distinguished honor society. Meeting other members, who shared some of the same the goals and aspirations of succeeding in life and making a difference in the world, as I do, really encouraged me to keep striving. The NSHSS is the only honor society I know of that has made it one of their goals to personally interact with their members. I can truly say that the NSHSS has influenced my life."

Meet in New York - June 1st Member Event

We are having a member event on June 1 from 2-5 p.m. on the U.S.S. Intrepid in New York City to celebrate the achievements of graduating seniors and to provide an opportunity for members to meet one another. Claes Nobel will formally present one of our Fall 2002 Claes Nobel Academic Scholarships. Several of our organizational partners will also be on hand to talk to students about resources and opportunities including the Educational Research Director from FastWeb. She'll give you tips on using the online searches to find the right scholarship for you.

The Society is hosting this event and picking up the tab for the museum admission fee, normally $16, for members and their guests. Explore from 2 until 4 pm but be sure to be on time for the program which begins at 4. Mr. Nobel will be available for photos immediately following the program. We hope to see you at this member event, and you are welcome to bring family members along. Dress is casual.  RSVP by Friday, May 30, 2003, if you will be attending this event, at: www.nshss.org/rsvp/rsvp.htm

Student Council

We are very pleased with both the quantity and quality of applications for our new Student Council.  The nominations were open to graduating seniors who wish to continue involvement with the Society and to increase their leadership experience.  The Council members will provide feedback and suggestions about Society scholarships, events, and programs and will be invited to attend member events.  Applications are currently being reviewed, and the council will be announced in our June newsletter.

Board of Advisors

Mr. Nobel has personally invited a select number of individuals to participate on the Board of Advisors. We have received many exciting acceptances representing outstanding individuals in education, politics, business, sports, entertainment, foundations, service, and others that share a desire to encourage young people to strive for personal excellence. This Board of Advisors will continue to grow and we look forward to the wisdom and knowledge these people may offer as we continue to add programs and scholarships to assist the membership. The June edition of The Scholar's Journal will officially announce the new board.
