Monthly Update for May 2003
Congratulations Graduates Best Wishes,
Claes
Nobel was selected to speak at the kick-off ceremonies of National
Scholarship Month in Washington DC. The event, held at The National Press
Club, was hosted by The National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA). NSHSS
is a member of the NSPA whose purpose is to manage scholarship
funds and provide resources for groups that provide scholarships. A
highlight of the event was a luncheon sponsored by Scholarship America,
featuring Miss America Erika Harold as speaker. The event was simulcast on
C-Span and National Public Radio.
A member reception was held at The National Press Club on May 2, where Mr. Nobel presented an award to Carolyn Amole, senior at West Potomac High School, Alexandria, Virginia. Carolyn is a recipient of a National Scholar Award and will attend Harvard in the fall. Other invited guests spoke to our members about scholarship resources and opportunities, including Jean Danielson of FastWeb and Emily Riedel of The Presidential Classroom. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet and get to know members, and we are planning other events in the upcoming months in various parts of the country, so please keep posted. Maeling Tapp, of Takoma Academy in Takoma Park, Maryland, said of the Washington, DC event:
Meet in New York - June 1st Member Event We are having a member event on June 1 from 2-5 p.m. on the U.S.S. Intrepid in New York City to celebrate the achievements of graduating seniors and to provide an opportunity for members to meet one another. Claes Nobel will formally present one of our Fall 2002 Claes Nobel Academic Scholarships. Several of our organizational partners will also be on hand to talk to students about resources and opportunities including the Educational Research Director from FastWeb. She'll give you tips on using the online searches to find the right scholarship for you. The Society is hosting this event and picking up the tab for the museum admission fee, normally $16, for members and their guests. Explore from 2 until 4 pm but be sure to be on time for the program which begins at 4. Mr. Nobel will be available for photos immediately following the program. We hope to see you at this member event, and you are welcome to bring family members along. Dress is casual.
