Earth Day Awards 2016: Taylor Meyer's Illuminating Project 08-09-2016

Taylor Meyer, a graduate of Stratford High School in Houston,TX, won an Earth Day Award from the Captain Planet Foundation and NSHSS Foundation. Taylor organized a group of classmates from her Academy of Science and Engineering class who worked together to build 200 solar-powered, portable lanterns to send to an underserved village in Nuevo Cañete, Peru. After compiling resources and efforts, Taylor and her classmates installed solar panels and energy-efficient LED lights onto 200 jars.

NSHSS IB Grant 2016 Winners 07-26-2016

Fieldwork with EPA scientists. Practicing Spanish with native speakers via Skype. Teaching human rights through handmade arpilleras. These are just a few of the creative ways eleven dedicated International Baccalaureate teachers used their $500 grants from the National Society of High School Scholars to make their curriculum exciting, meaningful and relevant. More than 100 educators nationwide competed for these grants designed to support and enhance the delivery of IB courses. Applicants came from all disciplines, with the winners representing Spanish, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Math, Visual Arts, Theory of Knowledge, Film, and English Literature.
