Kenai Central High School's Meredith McCullough Honored with 2019 Claes Nobel Educators of the Year Award
Meredith McCullough, a language arts teacher at Kenai Central High School located in Kenai, Alaska, was awarded 2019 Claes Nobel Educators of the Year by NSHSS.
McCullough, who was nominated by a former student and current NSHSS member, was honored with the award for her exceptional ability to connect and resonate with high school students, all while making classical literature relatable and easier to understand for students.
“I get to know my students as well as I can and as well as they’ll allow me,” McCullough said to local news source, Peninsula Clarion. “I think that’s kind of the building block; you have to have a relationship with them, because if they don’t trust you, they’re not going to talk about difficult subjects.”
McCullough underscores the "culture of mutual respect" that she creates with the students influences their relationships with each other as well. This dynamic enables students to open up about certain issues because they trust that their peers will be mindful with that kind of information.
