Makayla Gathers
Makayla Gathers is a senior at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, NC, where she is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. She has served in many leadership positions including senior class president, president/founder of her school's Black Student Union, and co-president of the Achieving Excellence Through Education Club. She’s involved in community organizations such as the Young Black Leadership Alliance and Girl Scouts of America, where she recently received the highest possible honor--the Girl Scout Gold Award. Beyond academics, she enjoys participating in theatre and playing volleyball. She is a long-time member of the International Thespian Society and has participated in numerous theatre productions. She played club volleyball and was a member of her school’s JV volleyball team, where she served as team captain her sophomore year. She is passionate about advocating for others and uses her leadership roles to promote diversity, inclusion, and unity. She finds joy in serving others and has volunteered with organizations such as the Salvation Army, Crisis Assistance Ministry, the Ronald McDonald House, and numerous others. Makayla was accepted into Harvard, where she plans to major in political science and work towards her goal of becoming a civil rights attorney.
