Maritza is a second-year chemistry undergraduate at CT State Community College - Gateway. She is a low-income first-generation student who aspires to become a scientific researcher. This has motivated her to cultivate experience in various research opportunities, such as the Yale Summer Enrichment Research Experience (YSERE) program, where she worked with induced pluripotent stem cells to differentiate them into organoids for drug test use against cystic fibrosis in the liver. The International Chemistry Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) is based in France and is sponsored by the University of Florida and funded by the National Science Foundation. For three months, Maritza learned various lab techniques while developing a project that focused on synthesizing molecules for alternative production of carbon nanotubes, all while experiencing the rich culture of France. Aside from research, Maritza loves getting involved on campus, where she serves as the president of the Gateway Math Club. She has shown passion and determination in her academic path, despite the multiple financial and domestic challenges she has faced. After graduating from Gateway, she hopes to transfer to a four-year university to obtain her bachelor's and, ultimately, a PhD in Chemistry.
